In a striking revelation, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has published a report showing that five national political parties received over ₹2,544 crore in donations during the financial year 2023-24 — and one state stood out with a whopping near-₹1,000 crore contribution.

Delhi Leads the Pack in Political Contributions

According to the ADR, Delhi emerged as the top donor, with individuals and organizations based in the capital contributing ₹989.20 crore to national political parties. The second-highest contributions came from Gujarat at ₹404.51 crore, followed by Maharashtra with ₹334.07 crore.

Other states making significant donations include:

  • Tamil Nadu – ₹142.7 crore

  • Telangana – ₹112.9 crore

Collectively, these five states accounted for the majority of the total donations made to national parties.

BJP Received Over 7x More Than Congress

Among the political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dominated donation receipts, amassing ₹2,243.94 crore — nearly seven times more than the opposition Congress, which received ₹281.48 crore.

Here’s a quick breakdown of donations (₹20,000 and above) in FY 2023-24:

  • BJP: ₹2,243.947 crore from 6,409 donations

  • Congress: ₹281.48 crore from 1,994 donations

  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), National People's Party (NPEP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) also reported contributions

  • Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) declared no donations above ₹20,000

Where Else Did the Money Come From?

Beyond the major donor states, other states and Union Territories together contributed ₹554.7 crore.

Interestingly, one donor from the United States made a ₹7,000 contribution to AAP, showing the reach of India's political influence.

However, ₹6.06 crore worth of donations couldn’t be linked to any state or UT due to missing or incomplete details in the parties’ submissions to the Election Commission.

A Closer Look: Why These Figures Matter

The ADR’s latest report sheds light on how political funding flows across India. It also underscores the dominance of Delhi-based donors — possibly a mix of corporates, individuals, and interest groups — in influencing national politics.

With elections around the corner, these numbers not only highlight who’s funding whom, but also raise questions about transparency, state-wise influence, and the political preferences of India’s wealthiest backers.
